In 1920, the Japanese settled at the area and named it "Shimen Manor". After retrocession of Taiwan to Republic of China, the area was renamed "Shimen Township". Originally there were 12 townships in Shimen, but due to the reorganization on 26 March 1978 that merged Gu Township into Laomei Township, Chongmen Township into Shimen Township, and Zhuli Township into Qianhua Township, the current administrative area contains 9 villages, which include Demao, Fuji, Laomei, Shanxi, Shimen, Jianlu, Qianhua, Maolin, and Caoli.
