Each coastline surrounding Taiwan has its own special points of interest. Among all the coasts surrounding Taiwan, the north coast boasts the greatest geographic variation. Affected by geological structure, sea, and climate, the north coast develops various forms of seacoast landscape and ecological scenery, hosting an abundance of marine species. 2.8 million years ago, Datun Mountain erupted and formed in the northwest the northern coast area. Its strata consisted of layers of miocene sedimentary rocks and andesite rocks. Sitting along the northern side of the mountain and facing sea, the coast from Tamsui to Jinshan forms a step-like gradation from south down to north-west. Except for flat lands around Tamsui estuary and Jinshan estuary, most areas are undulating terrains with canyons formed by stream erosion. About 800 thousand years ago, Zhuzi Mountain erupted. The lava erupting from Zhuzi Mountain flowed to the seacoast, forming valley landscape in Shimen and unique scenery in Laomei Seacoast.
