Due to high popularity of the yearly Kite Festival, Laomei Kite Park is established in Shimen District to gather domestic and foreign kite lovers.
Located at the southeastern side of Fugui Cape, Laomei is a typical fishing village in north coast. Laomei River, originating from Zhuzi Mountain, runs across the region and enters sea in the north. Due to presence of sand coast in Laomei, large amount of sand in the coastal is relocated by northeastern seasonal winds and ocean waves to form many sand hills. The formation of such ocean-side sand hills requires four major factors:
  1. stable supply of sand
  2. sufficient sand-carrying forces
  3. presence of ocean-side hills
  4. suitable space
Formed as the result of land uplift combined with wave erosion, sea grooves are another natural attraction in Laomei. When a rock is lifted above sea level, ocean waves erode the soft part away, leaving engraved grooves on it.

Every year from May to August, Gaillardia pulchella, or Firewheel flowers, are in full blossom on the sand hills in Fugui Cape and Laomei. Originated in North America, the Firewheel flower since its import into Taiwan in 1910 has flourished in the north coast and Penghu islands. Because it is wind-tide-resistant, the Firewheel flower is considered an excellent sand-fixing plant. During its blossom period, a large number of Firewheel flowers transform the sand hills into hills of flowers, which are another attraction in Laomei.
